Participants in past dialogues have identified the rising cost of many activities for youth as a significant issue. As the author Matthew Desmond observed in his recent book Poverty, By America, “The best way to ensure that opportunity is unequal and unfair is to charge for it.”
Here in St. Joe, who is being excluded from opportunities to learn and grow by rising costs or location? How does that harm our community? Where are we as a community investing in our youth? Where is more investment needed? How might we invest in the future so as to ensure opportunity for all?
The Imagine 2040 Plan envisions St. Joseph becoming a place where “everyone belongs,” where “our children and our grandchildren find value and opportunity,” and where people“ want to stay and be part of the future.”
Let’s lean into that vision. Come share your ideas for engaging and supporting our youth on November 16.
